important support
Getting started, answers to common questions, and how to reach me.
Getting started
- Open the !important app once. Its window walks you through the three steps below.
- Turn the extension on: Safari › Settings › Extensions › !important.
- Allow it on websites. Safari asks the first time you click the ! icon on a site, or you can decide in Safari › Settings › Websites › !important – for every website, or only the ones you want to change.
- Click the ! icon in the toolbar on any page. You see your styles for that site, switch them on and off, and choose On top or Replace. Manage styles… opens the manager, where you write and edit styles.
To try it out: two example styles and a page to try them on.
Questions
My style doesn’t show up on a site
Check that the style is switched on, that its rules match the site (Where it applies in the manager), and that Safari allows !important on that site. The ! icon turns orange when a style is at work on the current tab.
If the menu says “!important isn’t running on this page right now”, reload the page – it was opened before the extension could reach it, for example right after an update.
Why is the ! icon grey?
Grey means no style is applied on the current tab. That is normal on sites you haven’t styled. It turns orange as soon as a style is at work.
How do I hide something on a page?
Click the ! icon › Pick an element on the page, then click the element. ↑ and ↓ make the selection wider or narrower, Esc cancels. Hide saves it to a style called “Hidden elements – site”; Undo brings it back straight away, and you can remove the rule later in the manager.
For a keyboard shortcut, set one in Safari › Settings › Extensions › !important (⌃⌥H is suggested; Safari does not assign it by itself).
What’s the difference between On top and Replace?
On top keeps the site’s CSS and adds yours over it – right for small changes and hidden elements. Replace switches the site’s own stylesheets off so your style stands alone; the menu lists them and you choose which ones go. Switching back to On top brings them all back.
Which styles can I import?
Plain CSS files and UserCSS, from a file or a link (a GitHub page is fine). Imported styles are checked for new versions once a day; if you edited one, !important marks the update instead of overwriting your changes. Styles that need the Stylus or LESS preprocessor are not supported yet, and UserCSS options of the select and checkbox kind are left out.
How do I back up my styles or move them to another Mac?
In the manager, open Settings › Back up all. It saves one file with all your styles; Restore from backup on the other Mac adds them.
Can I change the language?
!important follows Safari’s language. In the manager, Settings › Language lets you pick English, Czech, Slovak or German instead.
How do I remove !important?
Turn the extension off in Safari › Settings › Extensions, or delete the app from the Applications folder. Your styles go with it, so back them up first if you may want them again.
